About St.Joseph's University

Located in the heart of Bengaluru, India’s Silicon City, St Joseph’s University is a renowned Jesuit institution. Founded in 1882 by the Paris Foreign Mission Fathers, it was handed over to the Jesuit order in 1937. Initially affiliated with the University of Madras, it later associated with the universities of Mysore and Bangalore. St Joseph’s College has been a pioneer in education. In 1986, it became the first affiliated college in Karnataka to offer postgraduate programs and the first to establish a Research Centre in 1988.

It was granted academic autonomy in 2005. The college was accredited with NAAC A++ grades in 2017. The college achieved university status on 2 July 2022 after the St Joseph’s University Bill was passed. It was inaugurated as India’s first Public-Private-Partnership University by President Smt. Droupadi Murmu on 27 September 2022. The University is committed to educational excellence, fostering leaders rooted in its philosophy “Fide et Labore” (Faith and Toil).

About Physics Department

The Physics Department at St. Joseph’s University has a rich history, dating to its inception in 1923. Today, the department boasts a faculty of 11 members and educates approximately 500 undergraduate and 60 postgraduate students. Over the past nine decades, the department has consistently elevated educational standards by fostering a scientific temperament and igniting a passion for physics among its students. The postgraduate program was started in 2010, marking a significant milestone in the department’s growth. In 2018, the Physics Department was formally recognized as a Research Center by Bangalore University, further solidifying its academic and research credentials. The department offers a two-year M.Sc. in Physics program and a Ph.D. program in Physics. In material science, our primary research areas include energy materials, solar cells, batteries, ceramics, nanomaterials, thin films, quantum dots, and 2D materials. Our central instrumentation facility has state-of-the-art equipment, such as thermal vapor deposition and electron beam evaporation for thin film coatings. Additionally, it features a photochemical reactor and electrochemical workstation applications. We utilize advanced tools for characterization, including X-ray diffraction studies, DRS UV-visible spectrometer, FTIR spectroscopy, TGA, and BET surface area analysis. These resources enable us to conduct cutting-edge, industry-ready research and contribute meaningfully to the field of physics.
